Art Q&A

Q: What file types do you require?

A: We only accept 300dpi, CMYK, press-quality PDF files. So we can return the final job to you quickly, all proofing and changes MUST be completed and the job finalized, PRIOR to you sending us the PDF. We don't send proofs for customer-supplied PDFs prior to printing.

Q: Why can't you accept any other file types?

A: We choose not to accept other file formats because of font embedding/copyrighting or resolution issues.

Q: Why are the colors different on my screen than on the printed piece?

A: ALL SCREEN MONITORS display in RGB. You are designing the job in RGB (Red Green and Blue) color mode which is the computer default for most graphic applications. RGB is an entirely different color space than CMYK. To get the closest match of how your job is going to look when printed design it in CMYK color mode. Unless you have a CMYK (four color printer) to see the final colors (pending your printer is accurate, or close), you will need to send the proof to us to print a physical proof, or to a print shop. We're a four color printer (CMYK) (Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black) so when you submit a file as an RGB we have to convert it to the CMYK color mode. The Reds, Greens, and Blues will lose value/brightness after the conversion and will not look the same. All files MUST be submitted as CMYK.

Q: What resolution do you require?

A: We are a high resolution printer so we require all submitted files to be 300dpi (Dots Per Inch). Any file that is submitted below this resolution will be rejected.

Q: What's a bleed?

A: A bleed is when the image area extends past the edge of the paper size. The actual image/text that you don't want trimmed off, must be within the area of the paper size by 1/8" . The job will be trimmed to paper size and the excess trimmed off. Please make sure your PDF has crop marks to be cut to the proper size.

Q: What is the trim area/safe zone for my print piece?

A: Please allow 1/8" from the sheet edge to make sure that your graphics are not cut off. There are times when cutting that we may need to come in 1/16" and by leaving a 1/8" trim area this will ensure that your job is cut correctly.

Q: What size do you want my design? Do you need me to add any bleed?

A: Submit you job the exact finished size that you want it to be. If you order a 4" x 6" postcard then the art you submit will be exactly 4" x 6". Keep in mind the "safe area" for the text. If you submit art that is larger than the 4" x 6" dimensions then we usually will shrink/enlarge to fit into the allocated space. There is one exception to this rule and it applies to business cards because of the size of them. Q: What size does the art for a business card have to be? A: The finished, standard business card size is 3.5" wide x 2" high. Want a full-bleed and no white border? Extend your graphics 1/8" past the finished size area. It is NOT advisable to extend TEXT beyond the finished size, but to keep the text within the 1/8" trim safety zone. Q: I need to submit art for a Magazine or Booklet. Do I need to do anything special? A: Please be sure that your booklet is saved as printer spreads, or in Booklet form. If, however, the booklet file size is 10MB or more, call for our FTP site log-in information . If your file is under 9MB, or less, you can E-mail the PDF.If you are sending a revised page, please add an "-R" to the end of the file name (001_filename-R). If you have further questions, please call 1.888.942.7117.
